About

Hu, Di (born in 1993, in Chengdu, China) is a multidisciplinary artist. She holds an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), an MS in Computer Science from Zhejiang University, and a BS in Physics from Beijing Normal University.  Hu Di's practice spans sculpture, performance, and interactive installations, often incorporating recycled materials and technology to explore themes of absurdities woven into the fabric of daily existence, the whimsical nature of our yearnings for love and intimacy, and the surreal aspects embedded within the structural intricacies of our societal systems with playful participatory experiences.

Recent solo exhibitions include Echo Chamber Realms where she creates a world where puppets embody conflicting desires for validation and affection, inviting audiences to reflect on their own social interactions, and On the Back of Silver Dragon which uses movement and found materials to construct a metaphorical society, commenting on social hierarchies and the fragility of human existence within modern life.

Hu Di’s works have been exhibited at the Torrance Art Museum, Łódź, and CalArts. Her approach challenges conventional notions of viewer participation and interaction, offering a space for both humor and critical reflection. She has been awarded the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant and several CalArts Project Grants.
